Ellie is Prevent Blindness Wisconsin's 2019-2020 Preschool Vision Screening Ambassador who exemplifies the many children whose vision is helped through a free certified vision screening. Ellie and her family shared her story throughout the year to raise awareness for the importance of early detection of children’s vision problems.
Ellie is an enthusiastic and inquisitive 5-year-old who enjoys art projects, reading books, and spending time with her family and their family pets. During Ellie’s certified vision screening at her preschool, the usually confident and outgoing Ellie became shy and quiet as she was unable to see the shapes on the vision screening chart. After not passing the screening, Ellie was referred to further vision care where she was diagnosed with amblyopia (lazy eye) and was prescribed glasses and a patching regimen.
Without the free certified vision screening from Prevent Blindness Wisconsin community volunteers, Ellie’s vision problems may have gone undetected, untreated, and could have resulted in permanent vision loss. “Ellie struggled with certain letters and numbers that looked similar, but I thought that it was just normal preschool confusion,” shared Ellie’s mother, Colleen. Like Colleen, many parents do not realize that their child sees the world differently than their peers. A certified vision screening is the first step to ensure children are on the road to healthy vision for school success and for a lifetime!
“We would absolutely recommend a Children’s Vision Screening to friends or family with a child in a preschool or a school. The vision screening at Ellie’s preschool was not stressful, but fun for her to participate in!” - Colleen McGinty, mom of Ellie
